Corresponding to San Francisco in United States, Xin Jin Shan – meaning New Gold Mountain in Chinese was a name given to Ballarat by the Chinese people during the gold rush era in the middle of the 19th century, that has been passed down until today. Being located in a heritage building built during the gold rush era, Xin Jin Shan Chinese Library is not only a commemoration of the old age, but a prospect of the new one in the dream of becoming a significant Chinese education, art and culture hub as well as a history research centre in Ballarat and even in Australia.
